About the position

Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences, Small Animal Unit invites applicants for a full-time, permanent position as a associate professor in veterinary internal medicine. The position is organized within the Internal Medicine Unit at the University Animal Hospital – small animals.

The small animal internal medicine unit receives referral cases within all areas of the field of internal medicine, including emergency cases admitted through our ECC service. Our brand new facilities located in Ås, a couple of miles south of Oslo, has top modern state-of-the-art equipment, contributing to the best care for our patients – as well as development of personal skills and specialist training. As an internist at our hospital, one is part of a large team of veterinary expertise, working alongside specialists within radiology, emergency and critical care, neurology, cardiology, surgery, anaesthesia, and clinical pathology.

The person appointed will work with clinical cases and teaching related to veterinary clinical internal medicine at the University Animal Hospital – small animals. The position also encompasses research, teaching, administrative tasks, and other non-clinical work.

The clinical work includes referred medical cases as well as emergency patients (transferred from our ECC service) and patients in the intensive care unit. The teaching is aimed at students in different levels of the veterinary education, veterinary nurse students and colleagues in internship and residency positions (at present there are no residents in internal medicine, but we are hoping to restart this programme within a few years).

The teaching includes lecturing for veterinary and veterinary nurse students at different levels and supervision of veterinary students’ master theses and veterinary nurse students’ bachelor theses.

We are looking for a candidate with good skills regarding communication with both owners, animals, students and internal as well as external colleagues. In addition, we wish the candidate to contribute to optimizing the learning circumstances for students, interns and residents in the clinic.

Main tasks

  • Referred internal medicine cases, including patients seen through our ECC service
  • Teaching undergraduate students
  • Supervision of postgraduates and residents
  • Administrative tasks, such as development of clinical protocols
  • Research activities; own research as well as supervision
  • Management

Competence

Required Academic qualifications:

  • Degree in veterinary medicine and license to practice veterinary medicine in Norway. A successful candidate lacking license to practice in Norway will be given time to acquire this before entering the position.
  • PhD within veterinary medicine.
  • Good written and spoken skills in a Scandinavian language. Good English skills are sufficient for especially well-qualified candidates.
  • Documented educational competence using a “teaching portfolio” with a description of.
    • Pedagogical qualifications, completed a program of at least 200 hours and pedagogical experience
    • Teaching-, pedagogical- and tutoring experience
    • Basic teaching skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision.

Those who do not meet the educational requirements for employment at the time of hiring shall be required to meet them within two years of employment.

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee in accordance with the Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions § 1-5.

Desired qualifications:

  • Diplomate status of ECVIM-CA (IM) /ACVIM (SAIM)).
  • Teaching experience at university level.
  • Research experience.
  • We would like a candidate who has previous experience with and good motivation for teaching and clinical work in veterinary internal medicine.
  • Research experience and network.

  • Good collaboration and communication skills.
  • Positive attitude, responsible and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work independently.

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1011 Associate professor (“førsteamanuensis”), wage framework 24, salary grade 68-84 (NOK 626.100 – 919 700). The position follows ordinary meriting regulations.

About the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at NMBU is the country’s only veterinary professional education and provide expertise in veterinary medicine and veterinary public health. The Faculty educates veterinarians, animal nurses and doctoral students in Veterinary Science and researches in veterinary medicine and related biomedical fields.
